Lonesome Dove - Larry McMurtry

Pulitzer Prize winning awesomeness

Title: Lonesome Dove
Author: Larry McMurtry
Publication details: October 1st 1999 by Pocket Books (first published 1985)

This Pulitzer Prize winning novel is the third and final book in the Lonesome Dove series. The story follows the town of Lonesome Dove on the frontiers of Texas. McMurtry intertwines the lives of heroes, villains, outlaws, Indians, prostitutes and settlers all trying to survive the harsh frontier life. The plot is slower than most westerns because it focuses less on high action single events but rather builds to one ultimate climax toward the end. This pace is appropriate because when reading the book we are in no hurry to advance and the tlaes of daily life and small confrontations are very entertaining. This novel also begins with a much lighter tone than other classic westerns, this is done strategically by the author to balance out the epic and enthralling final chapters.
